In our modern society, it seems like we’re seeing inflammation everywhere. And while acute inflammation—the kind we see when we get sick, like a hot fever—is a natural process that aims to protect the body, chronic inflammation is not. Chronic inflammation is long-term, lasting for months or even years, and is associated with a variety of chronic diseases, like heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Today we’re looking at our top three anti-inflammatory foods to help reduce inflammation in the body!

Turmeric

One of the most studied herbs to date, turmeric is an incredible anti-inflammatory. It’s bioactive compound, curcumin has been extensively studied for its ability to reduce inflammation in the body, and has even been shown to perform better than anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen! Curcumin is not easily available to the body though, and is best taken with a healthy fat (like ghee or coconut oil) or with black pepper. Black pepper contains a compound, called piperin, which can help enhance the absorption of curcumin by 2000%!

Ginger

Closely related to turmeric, ginger is next on our list of anti-inflammatory powerhouses. Ginger contains gingerole, which reduces inflammation in the body and can help alleviate painful joints, sore muscles, and other signs of inflammation, like allergies and asthma. Furthermore, ginger can boost the immune system, improve digestion function and reduce the risk of cancer.

Pineapple

This sweet fruit is more than just an odd topping on pizza! Pineapple contains an enzyme called Bromelain which can reduce swelling and inflammation in the body. Bromelain also works to improve digestion, specifically of proteins, and it has anti-blood clotting properties, which can prevent and dissolve blood clots and plaques I the arteries. Pineapple is also high in vitamin C and manganese, which is needed for an optimally functioning immune system, making it a great sweet treat this time of year!
