4 WAYS TO DETOX YOUR LIVER

The liver is one of the hardest working organs in our bodies: it removes toxins, breaks down alcohol and medication, produces bile, break down hormones and detoxifies the blood. So it makes sense that it’s incredibly easy to overwork the liver, causing uncomfortable symptoms like weight gain, skin breakouts, bloating and gas, sluggishness, and constipation. Since the New Year is right around the corner—along with health and wellness resolutions—we thought we’d break down the best ways to cleanse your liver!

  1. Eat a Clean, Whole Foods Diet. Choose organic whenever possible, opting for lots of fresh produce—especially leafy greens, and avoid overburdening your liver with pesticides and herbicides. When choosing meats, look for grass-fed and grass-finished meats. Conventional meat and dairy is loaded with hormones and antibiotics, all of which get broken down by the liver.
  1. Load Up on Bitter + Sour Foods. Bitter foods, like dandelion greens, arugula, and cacao, all work by stimulating liver activity, and providing the liver with cleansing nutrients like sulfur. Kimchi, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar and lemon are all great sour foods to help detoxify your liver by moving it out of stagnation.
  1. Confront Your Emotions. According to Chinese Medicine, the liver is the seat of fear, anger and resentment. Emotional detoxing is an often overlooked aspect of cleansing the body, but equally as important.  Learn to express your emotions in a healthy way, and avoid suppressing how you feel. It may be helpful to work with a counselor to get to the root of your feelings. Journaling and practicing gratitude are also great ways to dissolve anger in your life, and encourage positive thinking. 
  1. Consume Liver (Actually, though). It may seem strange, but eating liver can actually improve your liver health. Liver is high in iron, and B vitamins—especially B12, biotin and folate. These minerals work to support our own liver’s detoxification pathways. Try for chicken liver, in the form of pate, mixed with onions and garlic. Or, if the texture is too much, try freezing it in small pill-sized portions and swallowing it like a vitamin.
